Trust yourself above all else

One of the most significant moments in a person's life is the moment they trust themselves above all else. Not out of a sense of ego or unsubstantiated overconfidence but because in that moment the known variables, experience, vision, and intuition all come together after thousands of hours of doing something to create an a-ha moment when it is evident--
"I have the best answer. I have the best way forward!"

It is both exhilarating and terrifying when parents, mentors, teachers, people of authority, leadership, and others given power of being the one that knows better, doesn't in fact know better. In that moment of discovery the only thing standing in the way of reaping the rewards of that knowledge is the trust you have in yourself.
There are many opportunities to come face-to-face with this lesson in life. When selecting business ventures, people to build relationships with, how to spend time, or what route to take home there are moments where intuition, vision and experience come together offering guidance about the way to go for the best possible result.

The question becomes what happens when this feedback comes through? Does the person act without hesitation? Or do they take a moment to resist, to push back, to have doubt? What's worse does an impulse from self doubt overtake them in the moment causing them to override the intuitive guidance resulting in a decision that had no thought, no basis in data or situation, because thought was handed over to another who "knew better" when in fact as the circumstances play out. They in fact did not. That other person is not left with the consequences of the decision. Because that decision and it's consequences are our own. The handing over of the thought and the power was the decision. Instead of the trust that maybe in that moment I know better than anyone else around me about a particular point in time because I did the work, the research, the experience collecting and I just know better in that moment. That is what happened to me today and it cost me. It's what I've done with major decisions in my past and it cost me even more dearly. I don't recommend it.

No matter how many good reasons there are to feel that someone knows better than you do it is often true that you already know the best answer but you don't trust yourself. You don't want the responsibility of a wrong answer and the pain of loss that it brings so you go with someone else's idea and never feel satisfied because that is their path it isn't yours and therefore it will often go awry as a lesson to you to listen to your inner voice. Walk your own path to satisfaction and get the life results that you want to have.
